KarstenSchubert@weltbild.com (Germany). When we were children and used to help with the hay harvest, in the afternoon our mother would bring us a snack lunch in a large basket, covered with a cloth. It was full of tasty things and we would eat it sitting in the hay. Today we call this a picnic basket, and each guest receives their own picnic basket once they reach the green meadow at the edge of the wood. Having a picnic can mean a green meadow, the edge of the wood or a small stream in the middle in the forest. Or, in the evening, with a fire burning under a large copper pot cooking potatoes, for South Tyroleans this is a merende. Merende with potatoes from a copper pot, smoked meat, fine cheese and some little extras – not forgetting Luise Unterfrauner's home-made wholemeal bread baked with apples, served warm – simply unforgettable...
